Garage door problems – Most common malfunctions and their sources

Garage door problems may occur from different reasons, as a garage door suffers from daily usage. It is of extreme importance that, as you realize you have garage door problems, you try to fix them right-away because it is very dangerous and can cause accidents at any time, it can harm you or your family, or it can damage your car.
There can be many reasons why your garage door doesn’t work properly.

The garage door problems that are most likely to occur are listed below:

  • One of the most common garage door problems that occur every year is caused by icy weather, when the door opener system is blocked to the floor. You can prevent this problem by keeping your garage door safe from ice and snow. If your garage door has already frozen and remained stock with the floor, there’s nothing much you can do to solve this immediately. In order to prevent this repeating issue, one thing you can do is to adjust the limit of the garage door so that it wouldn’t touch the floor. A free space of an inch between the door bottom and the floor would be enough to prevent the door from being blocked.

  • Springs are always a headache when it comes for garage door problems and, as they show to have the smallest issue, they need to be paid a very close attention. Most of the time, they require adjustment or even replacement. If the springs are worn, than the door may rapidly fall down when closing, instead of lowering slowly ad smoothly. This job should be made by a handyman, as you can get easily hurt because garage door springs accumulate a lot of tension as they control the whole weight of the garage door and if force is released by accident, it can cause serious damages. Nobody should take this job as a do-it-yourself.

  • Probably the most annoying of the garage door problems would be that fact that your garage door opens by itself. There can be two reasons for this: the transmitter or one of the transmitters is stuck and the weak signal can interfere with the remote, creating intermitences in door opening. Another reason would be that, if you have new openers, they may learn multiple codes, and one of them could be your neighbour’s code. What you can actually do, as the problem does not come from the garage sensors or from the opener system, is to delete the old code and reset a new one.

  • If your garage door makes strange noises, you can first lubricate all the moving parts of the garage door and tighten the nuts. The next step is to verify if the springs or cables are not rusted. If the noises continue to persist, then you need to replace some garage door parts, like rollers or pulleys. These issues make part of the garage door problems that are very likely to occur after a period of time.

Whatever the garage door problems may be, once you realized what causes the malfunction of the garage door, you need to fix it right-away in order to ensure your family’s safety. If you need to replace one or more garage door parts, then call for a specialist to have the problem properly solved.
